About NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series is top-tier of three national touring series in the sport alongside the Xfinity Series and Truck Series. The Cup Series operates with a points system. The driver sitting atop the leaderboard to finish the regular season earns 15 playoff points. The Cup Series playoff features the 16 highest-scoring drivers competing through four rounds. A winning driver and winning owner are annually crowned separately.

The Cup Series season runs from February to November every year. NASCAR relocated its Championship Weekend from Homestead-Miami Speedway, which hosted the event for 18 seasons, to ISM Raceway near Phoenix, Arizona.

Iconic tracks that host Cup Series races include the Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and Talladega Superspeedway. The Daytona 500 has annually served as the season-opening Cup Series race since 1982.

History of NASCAR Cup Series

The NASCAR Cup Series was founded in 1949 by Bill France Sr. and has undergone several evolutions since. It began as the Strictly Stock Series before switching to the Grand National Series (1950-71), Winston Cup Series (1971-2003), Nextel Cup Series (2004-07), Sprint Cup Series (2008-16) and the Monster Energy Series through the 2019 season.

NASCAR opted against renewing with Monster Energy and instead announced the Cup Series would feature a multilayered sponsorship model in December 2019. Busch Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO, and Xfinity were named as "premier partners."

The trophy was renamed the Bill France Cup ahead of the 2020 season, the first without a title sponsor since 1971.

Richard Petty is the winningest all-time Cup Series driver with 200. The octogenarian notched his first win in 1960 and his last in 1984. In March 2019, though, Petty was surpassed by Kyle Busch in terms of all-time combined national series wins.

Jimmy Johnson topped the Cup Series from 2006 to 2010, marking the first time one driver had won in consecutive years since Jeff Gordon (1997-98). The late Dale Earnhardt did so on three separate occasions (1986-87, 1990-91 and 1993-94).

    Just not the same

    Coke 600 is not the same as it use to be. Don't like that there are 3 "round"or "legs of the race", whatever they call them. I guess I saw my last Stewart-Haas race. Overall just a disappointment.

    Was having a blast at the coca cola 600. Until it rained around 9:30. Then we waited 2 hours while the dried the track and finally around 11:30pm without raining or any lightening the cancelled the rest of the race so i paid for 400 laps and and only got 249. Also the track was drying the probably could’ve been racing by midnight or they could’ve waited till the next day on memorial day to finish the race no one had work the race teams shops are all around the track. So there’s no rush for the cars ro have a long drive home. Or they could’ve finished it that night late because no one had to work the next day. Sooo disappointed. I would’ve understood if the track wasn’t drying but it most definitely was. To bad i can’t get my money or some of it back. Or a discount on tickets for next year.

    Could’ve been better

    I bought the tickets for my fiancé as a birthday gift back in February. Everything was going great, we were having a great time and a great first experience. But then the rain came and the race was canceled with a little over 200 laps to still go. We know that you guys couldn’t help the rain, but we also couldn’t either. We couldn’t have known it was going to do that. And for it to be cut so short with no effort to make it right for the customers who spent so much money to be there, wether that be the purchase of the tickets, or the travel costs to be there. It could’ve been better. Hopefully the next one we go to won’t end the same way! Other than that, it was a great time.

    Surreal experience

    This was my first in person race and I can truly say NASCAR and Charlotte motor speedway did an amazing job honoring those in the armed forces for the Coca-Cola 600! I was in aw the entire time. Then the rain came and we didn't get to finish the race. I was heartbroken that such a perfect day could end that way. We know we will come back for the entire weekend next time and will look into camping instead of a hotel.

    You don't tell the fans to stick around because you are gonna go racing again.. we wait 1.5 hrs, watch a piss poor drying effort. Then you call race. I'm done with nascar

    Good but Called the Race too Soon

    Prerace activities were good, about on par with previous years. Really cool blackhawk army helicopter display. NASCAR does a great job coordinating and honoring with the US military (probably better than any other major sport) so this was a big plus. The biggest disappointment was calling the race when they did in the middle of the 3 of 4 stages. Threw the cautions around 9:30pm, started trying to dry the track around 10:20pm and called the race around 11:30pm because more storms were forecasted after 1:00am. A lot of this was unfortunate circumstance. However, for as or as much as I payed for tickets, unfortunate circumstances or not, I will not be attending again if I'm only guranteed to watch a little over half a race.

    Great time. Tons of action. Cut short because of rain, but what an awesome bunch of fun. Great end to our vacation. You have created 6 new NASCAR fans.
